Movie Monday: What is Permaculture?
In the permaculture design certificate course that I took here in August of 2010, one of the first things we talked about was how we define permaculture and wow, there are literally as many variations on the definition of it as there are people on the planet! One of the more comprehensive definitions I’ve come across in my fiendish search for permaculture quotes is that
Permaculture is an approach to designing human settlements and agricultural systems that mimic the relationships found in natural ecologies.
which just so happens to be exactly 144 characters (perfect for Twitter!) and comes from the Permaculture Media Blog.
The truth of the matter is that the permaculture movement is a hard paradigm to define, because, in many ways, it is more of a series of lifestyle choices rather than some sort of -ology. Here is one of my favorite Permaculture teachers, Penny Livingston-Stark, and her 3 minute download of Permaculture 101…. What’s your favorite definition?
