O.U.R. Builders Report February 2013
“Envision a future that is socially just, culturally rich, and ecologically restorative.”
Quote from the standard 2.1 of the “living building challenge” by the international living future institute. This is a certification process more ecologically stringent then the LEED program, where it’s not about points chasing, but 20 imperatives within seven petals; site, water, energy, health, materials, equity, beauty. Using the flower as a metaphor, for it’s strength beauty and self dependence.
The eatery building is seeking this certification and it has been slowly blossoming over the winter months. Down to a skeleton crew of three, progress is slow and steady, but roof completion is near. Many hours of modifying and beefing up salvaged trusses then lifting into place with the mighty machine that is human. Scrounging up plywood and flexing it onto the organic curves of 2’ starbursting parallel chord truss rafters. Many a teas and many a chats, table sawing, circular sawing and most importantly laughs. Its definitely been an organic process but critical path tells me bracing then fascia and green roofing is next.
