Photo of the Week: OUR Rooster

Village016

This handsome fellow is our Rhode Island Red Rooster. The majority of our flock is made up of non-industrial Rhode Island Red chickens, which are listed as a recovering breed by the American Livestock Breeds Conservancy. Developed on the East Coast of the US (Rhode Island and Massachusetts), this breed is great for backyard flocks because it is both hardy and has good egg laying capabilities. Ours free range in the back pasture, happily living with the sheep and cow, and coming in to a coop overnight for comfort and safety from predation.
