Welcoming OUR New Farm Manager Grant!
“While I have just arrived and am getting a feel for the rhythms of OUR, and knowing that there are some big challenges facing this community, its difficult to contain my enthusiasm for this place. The commitment to building healthy relationships, to demonstrating low-impact, non-toxic and beautiful construction techniques, to building positive relationships with government, it goes on and on. I feel so fortunate to be here.” –Grant
Grant became the farm manager for OUR Ecovillage in March, 2014. He has been involved in local organic agriculture since 1993 in a number of roles, including production, marketing, and advocacy. He co-owned Companions Shared Farms, a CSA, from 1993–95, helped start the certified organic farm at Yarrow Ecovillage in 2004, and has also farmed at Edenvale and Glen Valley Organic Farm, both in Abbotsford.
Grant served on the board of the BC Association of Regenerative Agriculture, and co-founded NOWBC Food Co-op, an experiment in shifting Vancouverites’ food buying habits by picking up their pre-ordered locally produced organic groceries at neighbourhood depots.
He founded the Oak Street Farmers’ Market in the Oakridge neighbourhood of Vancouver in 2011, served on the certification committee of the Biodynamic Agriculture Society of BC for two years, and has been its certification administrator since December of 2012. Grant has been teaching food gardening skills to children and adults since 2003 in a number of venues, mostly Community Centres, and in 2007 began an edible landscaping business which focuses on the design and installation of integrated food and ornamental gardens.
We are thrilled to welcome Grant to OUR farm where he will be growing for the Village and also for OUR CSA program, which is off to a great start behind the scenes and now accepting registrations from Cowichan-area residents.
