Today at O.U.R. Community meeting many a topic was discussed… GMOs, zero-waste policies and of course, Goethe. Waith a minute, why was Goethe discussed?
Under the pressure that the coming transition brings for us, there has been a real exploration of our needs and desires to commit to the Ecovillage – hence the heavy topics. And of course Brandy synchronistically had brought the following quote to the meeting, prefacing the importance of its words to the genesis of O.U.R. Ecovillage. Only it’s not really by Goethe, I found as I trolled the net for a source; they are the words of W. H. Murray in The Scottish Himalaya Expedition, 1951 (find the whole story of mistaken identity here).
Until one is committed, there is hesitancy, the chance to draw back, always ineffectiveness. Concerning all acts of initiative (and creation), there is one elementary truth the ignorance of which kills countless ideas and splendid plans: that the moment one definitely commits oneself, the providence moves too. A whole stream of events issues from the decision, raising in one’s favor all manner of unforeseen incidents, meetings and material assistance, which no man could have dreamt would have come his way. I learned a deep respect for one of Goethe’s couplets:
Whatever you can do or dream you can, begin it.
Boldness has genius, power and magic in it!’
What an inspiring way to face the world each day! May we all dream and be bold!
