A course on Sustainable Energy Options

Location: O.U.R.Ecovillage, Shawnigan Lake, BC

Dates: September 11/12

Facilitators: Keith Hirsche and Chris Walker

What is our energy use? How does it compare to others?

What are available alternatives to being on the Grid?

Beyond fluorescent light bulbs: How can I reduce my consumption?

These are the kind of question that we will address in this workshop.

Day 1:

- Overview of historical and current energy use from a global and Canadian perspective.

- The twin challenges of ‘peak oil’ and ‘climate change’

- potential for powering our society

- Possible scenarios for the development of a truly sustainable energy system in Canada

Day 2: (mostly hands-on)

- Household (and office) energy auditing and management strategies

- Introduction to small-scale solar electric (PV) and solar hot water (SHW) including an overview of components, design parameters, installation options, building code issues and government incentives.

- How to determine your personal path towards a more sustainable energy future.
