October 10, 2014 Natural Building 0

eatery progress 2Fall is here and we have been getting things buttoned down for the winter: collecting firewood, closing down the showers, and cleaning and putting all the tools and equipment away until next year.

Another big milestone comes to fruition as we put the crowning touches on OUR Zero Mile Meal Eatery with new doors (salvaged from the upgrades of buildings happening at Shawnigan Lake Private School). We are very grateful for Rob Duncan from Cascara Construction, who had recently had a wedding here at OUR and is helping to install the new doors. OUR Building Team has been working flat out on the next stages of this building with some major beautification and next practical steps around putting in OUR teaching kitchen with the help of Lush  natural products who made an amazing donation towards completion of the Eatery; we love the new 3-stage sink in OUR kitchen. Alongside of this OUR micro-climates in the garden and El Banco Cagedaro are each having the last of cobbing done and will be fully bedded down for the winter.

All other buildings have began their winterizing process. Waterlines protected for frost, site and infrastructure breakdown of summer yurts/teepees/OUR Circus Tent….and as always the massive pile of 15 logging trucks of salvage windfall timber is slowly slowly being stored as last remaining bits of firewood we put into storage.

Already OUR team looks towards the next building season as we determine what to do now and what to save till then. We have started the planning for next year and have just received a couple of loads of clay to get things ready for the next building season. With Elke coming back to lead the natural building team, with Ben Garratt (Project lead for the EcoNest/Mandala House) full out on team as well, and Pat Hennebery (The Canadian ‘Cobfather’) guest teaching all within OUR Natural Building Extravaganza….Chad will have his hands pretty full with site coordination. More guest teachers will be announced as the specialization workshops within the Extravaganza are announced. We look forward to working with Elke again next summer as she brings years of experience and an amazing approach to design. Calling all those interested in learning from one of the greats in the Natural Building movement. Registration for next year will be available on OUR website.

OUR team will certainly take on any Volunteers still for the end of this season. There is some natural building to learn and there could be some exchange for anyone who has carpentry, plumbing, electrical skills especially at this point. There is a great dynamic onsite and lots of time to connect with other folks on OUR team while you are here. Hoping to see you soon–at least for a tour of all the changes.
