2010 Cowichan Wine & Culinary Festival

Wine & Culinary FestivalThe Cowichan Wine and Culinary Festival is a yearly event that links local organic farms, wineries, artisans, environmental stewards, speakers and musicians to create a weekend of entertainment and education for members of our local community. This year, in September, the festival also played a large part in kicking off the Protect OUR Ecovillage Forever campaign.

We had lots of great local vendors, musicians and speakers here at the village including, amongst many others, Amuse Bistro, Dragonfly Dreaming Organic Natural Organic Care, Get Fresh, and Shea Butter Market.

Together we gave the public a taste of what food security planning and living lightly on the planet might look like in the form of edible landscaping, natural building, water recovery systems, diversion of waste streams, alternative energy technologies, sustainable organic and local products and, of course, delicious treats from O.U.R. very own organic garden.

We enjoyed local music and many great speakers including Carolyn Herriot, author of Zero Mile Diet and A Year on the Garden Path: a 52 week organic garden guide. Carolyn spoke as part of our Sustainable Living Speaker Series for the final night of the festival, talked to us about her book and her endeavours to eat locally and sustainably.

As part of the kitchen team, I helped prepare a zero-mile organic feast, the culinary creation of our resident kitchen goddess, Marisa. Along with an incredible team of volunteers, we spent many wild and wonderful hours preparing a gourmet spread of roasted pumpkin soup, pan-seared fava beans, roasted fingerling potatoes, white wine risotto, chicken cacciatore, fresh, handpicked salad greens from OUR garden and a dessert of lavender pavlova for a room full of hungry locals.

Add a delicious locally-brewed beer à la Trent and good company and what more could you want? What a perfect way to celebrate the harvest season here at O.U.R. Ecovillage.
