Cowichan Forest Scouts

Forest Scouts Cowichan is a weekly program based at OUR ECOVILLAGE in Shawnigan Lake. It provides youth ages 7-13 with an exciting, safe and meaningful way to explore and engage in the natural world.

Learn how the animals live every day in the wild, finding all their food, medicine, shelter, and water. Learn earth-based skills that have allowed kids all over the world to thrive in nature. Through activities, challenges, and song, youth will discover greater self-confidence, learn cooperation and teamwork, and gain a sense of environmental care taking.

Each week will be a new adventure on the land: playing games, hearing nature-based stories, building fire, carving primitive tools, weaving baskets, foraging for food and medicine, journaling nature mysteries, learning bird language, expanding our senses, exploring the pond, tracking wild animals and more!

As a weekly program, Forest Scouts Cowichan will give students a deep immersion into nature connection and cultural mentoring learning skills, making projects and ultimately finding peace and connection. The more often we enter the “mind of the scout”, the deeper that mindset will permeate our everyday life.

OUR Ecovillage 20th AnniversaryWhat Makes Our Ecovillage So Special?

OUR courses are unique from almost all others as you are stepping into OUR ECOVILLAGE – a 25 acre “Sustainable Living Demonstration Site and Education Centre” and one of the most built out permaculture projects in North America.

For over 20 years Our Ecovillage has been working towards “Lawful Permaculture” — having every innovative design and building project that we have created also be fully zoned, permitted & approved by regulatory officials.

Through partnering with all 3 levels of government, business & corporate sponsors, academia, and the grassroots of the wider community and it’s organizations; at OUR we bring together a range of professionals, permaculture teachers, regulatory folks, and technical stakeholders ready to train others in the next stages of how permaculture projects can become fully legal – like OURS!
