Villager Profile of the Month – Neil Bateman
“Hi, my name is…”
Obvious pop-culture reference out of the way; hello, I am Neil Bateman. This February I signed-on at OUR Ecovillage to take part in the year-long “Sustainable Living, Sustainable Learning” (SL2) education project as the Multimedia Program Assistant.
Until January of this year, I had no idea what “permaculture” was, what an “intentional community” is, and that OUR Ecovillage even existed a mere 10km from my new home north of Cobble Hill. Over the last six weeks, I have been on a whirlwind learning adventure, absorbing as much as I can about “dynamic governance”, the “campus” (as I call it), and the personalities that inhabit the community.
I bring with me a checkered history of supporting technology that spans 20 years; which has only recently has given way to my first undergraduate degree in psychology and education. If you find yourself pondering how someone gets from computer science to psychology, you would not be alone. The trick is in suspending stereotypes. My contribution to the community bridges these two worlds, as I will be capturing and telling the stories of the village in the form of digital learning portals for the village, community schools, and greater community as a whole.
I am joyfully looking forward to the journey ahead and invite you all to come discover along with me.
