Holy Basil (Ocimum sanctum), also known as Tulsi, is described in Ayurvedic texts as “the incomparable one” and is considered to be an incarnation of Tulasi or Vrindavani, a consort of Lord Vishnu. It is considered a symbol of fidelity and helpful in attaining spiritual enlightenment, It has been used to support a healthy response to stress, maintain blood sugar levels within a normal range, promote longevity, nourish the mind and elevate the spirit. It exhibits impressive adaptogenic activity – which means it can help the body adapt to stresses of various kinds, such as physical, mental, and emotional – by maintaining equilibrium among the biochemicals associated with the different stress systems in the body. Some call Holy Basil the ‘Queen of Herbs’ for its incredible properties and significance in Ayurveda as a sacred plant that infuses you with its ‘divine energy’ – body, mind, and soul. The leaves and flowers are often drunk as tea, and it can have a beautifully calming effect on the mind and assist with mental clarity. We have many Holy Basil plants growing in the garden, and I love munching on and smelling the flowers as I walk by, they have an intoxicating scent.
